@The Great North Run 2019
The Great North Run 2019!!
Well what can I actually say ... what a remarkable day!!
From the week leading up to the actual day of the run, the support & vibe within the club was second to none. From members that had already ran the great north run, advising our first timers on what to do, where to go and get what to take on the day.
The day itself, from gathering at Biddick Academy, we started fund raising before the running had even begun.
Getting to and from the GNR can be a stressful experience. The infrastructure around Newcastle and South Shields isn’t designed for 57,000 to be there at one time with the main roads closed. As a club we decided to remove the stress for everyone getting there and organised paid buses for our members and their friends and family to use.
It was a good experience all travelling to the start, it helps settle nerves, everyone is in the same predicament as you, it’s nice to have people to walk to the start line with and there is always someone in the same pen as you. Meaning you're never alone.
We raised a phenomenal £435, for Rondal McDonald House Alder Hey Liverpool. One of our members and his family will use this service, when their young son goes in to Alder Hey Liverpool Hospital for a life changing operation. Raising this money will support this service still being available when they do travel down.
From couple of first timers described this day as ...
‘To say I felt amazing is a understatement’ ‘most rewarding thing I have ever took part in, generosity off locals unreal’
‘My first had dreaded it to the point of not sleeping now I ask myself what was that all about? Enjoyed every minute, everything about it, thanks to Washington Running Club for all there support’
‘First GNR & still buzzing three days later’
From people that have ran this event on more than one occasion,
‘Atmospheric, emotionally charged, uplifting half marathon ever!’
‘Perfect day got runners high few times on way round and got 6 mins off personal best’
‘Just my third but most enjoyable. Over 5 min off last years time with PB of 1:28 Great to see so many people happy with their times this year’
‘4 years of running GNR and 2 with WRC .. thanks to these sessions removing 10 minutes off my time, another person best’
Atmosphere was unmatched
From a club members & their family supporting:
‘Fab to cheer on so many from the club at such a massive local event’
‘The after party was worth the walk from Sunderland’
And then there was our own Mo Farah's, Tim Jones crossing the finish line in 1 hr 18 mins (yes you read that right, well done Tim) with British Olympic athlete Aly Dixon, and not far behind him Jason Oshin & Simon Fairbrother.
So many more personal bests right the way through all our groups and abilities, so many for a club to be proud of.
Not forgetting our own purple minion completing the half marathon in just over 2 and a half hours, the Howard family themselves raised an amazing £1300 for Bloodwise, not only a charity close to their family but many others across the club.
Seeing targets obliterated for so many charities so close to many people within the club is rewarding for so many.
Finally celebrating everyone’s achievements by meeting as a club at the beer tent and having a few beverages to round up an amazing day. Everyone congratulating each other. Getting to hear everyone’s experiences just kept the buzz off the run going for longer.
From the committee, well done to all the run leaders for delivering productive and obviously very beneficial sessions, and thank you too all the runners for making the club who & what we are today
